The video game news world is abuzz with new Sony news. As of today, it has been made official that Sony has acquired cloud streaming company Gaikai, but what does this mean for the future of Sony?
Well, as always, it’s hard to say. However, Sony’s official press release does offer some insight into the future, mentioning:“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences.”
“SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”
So, as you might have gathered, Sony wants to offer the streaming of games to its users, something that is not currently done on any console. Sure, all three consoles offer some form of games on demand, but none offer users the ability to stream games from an outside source without having to install them to their hard drive.
This seemingly small feature is clearly of importance to Sony, so important that they were willing to shell out $380 million dollars to acquire the company and their technologies that Sony keeps mentioning in the press release.
Whether or not it is truly going to change the way games are played on consoles remains to be seen, but Sony is willing to take a gamble. What do you guys think? Is this move part of their strategy for the future of gaming (and perhaps the PS4)? Is it just Sony flashing their money around and hoping for good things to result from it? You decide.
