Rumors have been flying around for some time now that both Microsoft and Sony are gearing up to reveal their next-generation gaming consoles, a return-fire move following Nintendo's Wii U reveal at E3 last year. Some rumors pointed to CES, which is happening RIGHT NOW, some pointed to E3. Kaz Hirai knows the score on the Sony side, and he wants you all to know too: not gonna happen.
Hirai confirmed that no console announcement is coming at E3 this year during a roundtable interview at CES in Las Vegas yesterday (via The Wall Street Journal). "We are not making any announcements at E3," he said, echoing comments previously made by Sony's video game division boss, Andy House. "I've always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."
Now just because the PS3 will have a 10-year life, that doesn't mean the next Sony console will arrive right at the decade mark. The PS2 is still alive, and the PS3 will no doubt continue to live into the next generation. There just won't be any announcements ABOUT that next generation in June. Or probably at all this year, I would guess.
