Go with the second one for sure.
On my Apevia case the large side fan hit my CPU heatsink's heat pipes so I had to notch out little piece on it.
Not a big deal, and you probably won't need to do that.
As for your question on steam about thermal paste.
No you won't need to buy any thermal paste because the cooler will come with it but the paste on the cooler isnt the best and you can get better for very cheap.
I used my cooler's thermal paste and it was fine, temps were ok.
But when I upgraded CPU's I got Arctic Silver Alumina and that was only $2 at the time.
It made a pretty good difference in temps even though I was running a cooler dual core before.
If you want it to stay the coolest buy some arctic silver 5.
But the thermal paste the cooler comes with will be just fine.
