According to recent reports, Microsoft is the latest tech giant to jump on the smartwatch bandwagon. Although the company has not formally commented on the rumor, unverified sources familiar with Microsoft's supply chain have claimed that the company has ordered component parts for a watch-style device from Asian suppliers.
Microsoft has dipped its toe into these waters before with their SPOT device, a multipurpose smartwatch that was in production from 2004 to 2008. SPOT never quite took off the way Microsoft wanted it to, but with the recent surge in interest from media and consumers, the time might be ripe for a return to the smartwatch business. As the hype surrounding similar products from Apple, Google, and Samsung grows, it would appear that wearable technology is on its way into the mainstream consumer market, whether you like it or not.
Microsoft's stagnant stock has seen better days, so it's likely that the company is hoping that a new and exciting product like a smartwatch will be the cure for what ails them. Again, there's been no word from Microsoft to confirm these rumors.
