According to The Verge, the set-top box will be competing with Apple TV by offering causal gaming titles and “near-instant” access to TV and entertainment services.
The device is part of a two-SKU strategy at the company, offering a lower cost alternative to the planned next-gen console in development.
Meanwhile, The Verge was told that the core architecture for the next-Xbox will be scalable, allowing it to run other devices – possibly adding a phone which could run Xbox Live in full.
Microsoft’s hardware line-up is to be unveiled next year, with a release scheduled just “ahead of the holiday shopping season.”
