Grand Theft Auto V (commonly shortened to GTA V) is an upcoming open world action-adventure video game being developed by games developer Rockstar North in the United Kingdom and published by Rockstar Games. The game will be the first major title in the Grand Theft Auto series since Grand Theft Auto IV - 2008, which started the fourth "era" in the series. The fifteenth game in the series overall, GTA V is to be set in fictional Los Santos in the state of San Andreas and its surrounding areas, based on modern-day Los Angeles and Southern California. A rendition of Los Santos was previously featured as one of three cities in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, from the series's third era.
FAQ
When is the GTA V Release Date?
There is still no information as to when Grand Theft Auto V will be released. Release dates given by retailers are only guesses entered into their systems. Of course we are trying to stay current with Rockstar and Take-Two trends so let's take a look at some things that may give us a clue to the actual release date...
1. Rockstar North character animator Alex O'Dwyer had his CV posted online. In it he listed Grand Theft Auto V with an October 2012 release date. It was later removed but has all of us wondering if that's the current release period or if that was only an estimate.
2. Recently Rockstar revealed that Max Payne 3 DLC is set to extend all the way to the end of this year. Obviously Rockstar would like to sell as much DLC as possible so they probably wouldn't want GTA V stepping on it all. This puts the game into 2013.
3. A few months ago the ESRB rated Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City for the PlayStation 3. Rockstar has yet to say anything about this. The 10 Year Anniversary of Vice City is later this year so they will likely be busy with that and the re-release on current consoles would be icing on the cake. As such, Fall 2012 seems less likely for GTA V. It can also be noted that the San Andreas 10 Year Anniversary will be in 2014. This leaves 2013 without major Grand Theft Auto news.
4. BioShock Infinite (Irrational Games, 2K Games) was set to release this October. Although not directly involving Rockstar Games, parent company Take-Two would probably want to space out major titles and that wouldn't allow GTA V into Rockstar's previously favorite October release or nearby. Earlier this month BioShock was delayed to February 2013. This opens up the fall a little bit for GTA V but will it be enough given the above points?
5. In recent financial talks, Take-Two is expecting high revenues and good stock price in the fiscal year ahead that ends March 2013. A few analysts are expecting GTA V in some form in order to meet Take-Two's financial expectations - possibly a release by April 2013.
GTA V on PC?
We are certain Grand Theft Auto V will release on PC. Many fans are familiar with the PC version of GTA IV. The console port was not as smooth as we all would have hoped for. Fortunately Rockstar Games seems to have learned from past mistakes. The PC version of Max Payne 3 was built alongside the consoles to provide excellent playability across a wide range of computers. We are certain GTA V will do the same and possibly release only two weeks after the consoles as well! PC requirements for the game will not be known until a couple weeks before the release.

Will CJ or other characters return?
It is unknown if characters from GTA IV will return to GTA V. We are certain CJ and others from the III era will not be. Shortly after our last FAQ the voice of CJ, Chris Bellard, stated on twitter that he is not involved with GTA V. Furthermore, Rockstar has stated their views on the different sets of characters and the difference between background characters and "real" characters:
So again, it is unlikely we'll see CJ in GTA V. Other supposed "leaks" featuring characters or the GTA 5 story are fake.
When is GTA V Trailer #2 or more info coming?
Although Max Payne 3 is released, that doesn't mean new GTA 5 information is going to start releasing. It could be weeks or even months before the GTA V hype really starts. Don't fear, though, as screenshots or some other form of information may come before the end of the world - I mean year. The flow of information really depends on the release date for GTA V discussed above.

Are GTA V vehicles in Max Payne 3?
Recently some fans made some discoveries in Max Payne 3. First was a vehicle list ripped from the game files. Some have noted that not all of the vehicles listed actually appear in Max Payne 3 leading others to speculate if they are for GTA V or Max Payne 3 DLC.

Even more recently, pictures of airplanes were discovered in the Docks multiplayer map of Max Payne 3. The most notable is a military jet that looks VERY much like the jet seen flying through Downtown Los Santos in the first GTA V trailer. Characters
"Old Guy"
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This man is almost certainly voiced by Ned Luke.
The first and only person so far we are shown a close up of. He appears to be around 50 years old, Caucasian, wearing a shirt and suit jacket. He moved to a big house in Los Santos for the weather and "magic", retired from a bad "line of work", and dreams of having a nice family (or, at least kids). If he is in fact the person speaking, he could very well be the protagonist or at the very least another major character in GTA V.
If he already has children, it is possible he could be Albert De Silva with a son named Kevin as listed in the casting calls below. He could also be Calvin North who is a divorced FBI Agent who has gained weight and would have reason to move. However, Calvin is listed as "badly dressed". Jerry Cole is a criminal information vendor which would be a bad line of work although he is "disabled". However, this person's lower half is not seen so it is possible he is Jerry but what are the chances a disabled person would be speeding around recklessly though? It is possible he is an older version of the guy in the blue car (below).
A set of screenshots released on August 20th shows what is certain to be the same person flying a military jet:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
"Guy in blue car"
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
A noticeable vehicle seen in a few spots. The driver seems to also be the same guy leading the robbery while dressed as pest control personnel. He appears to be around 40-50 years old. He may not be the same person as the "Old Guy" above because this person appears to have a little grey hair above the ears and is skinny or more fit. However, it is possible this is a younger version of "Old Guy" and the grey hair is simply the graphic engine displaying shadows and light on his head.
"Guy in red car"
Another noticeable vehicle, the red car can be seen throughout the trailer. This makes the driver a person of interest. He appears to be around 30 years old with a tan, possibly Hispanic and/or African decent, and wearing a wife beater shirt plus a yellow or gold watch. He may also among the robbers in the pest control scene as either the guy on the left exiting the rear of the van or as the driver of the van who can be seen for a split second and is wearing a white wife beater too. If he is the driver, maybe the guy exiting the rear is a family member?

Niko Bellic
Although in our control for GTA IV, Niko could very well make an appearance in GTA 5. In the previous GTA III series of games, quite a few characters were seen in the different games including Claude (aka Fido) and Catalina from Grand Theft Auto III appearing in San Andreas. Even if we begin a new GTA V series of games, Niko and others could make their way back into the story. As evidence of Niko traveling, check out a plane ticket to San Andreas with his name on it which can be seen below. This was found on Rockstar Games own Social Club website in GTA IV's Story Gang section! Easter egg or what?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Carl Johnson (CJ)
Another person we've already controlled but in San Andreas. A billboard in GTA IV depicts a very similar looking person to CJ and could hint at his presence in Los Santos as speculated. Rockstar has stated GTA IV was in a different "universe" to the III series and would not feature characters from the previous games, however, there has been some crossover outside of the story including graffiti and a billboard found in the game pictured below. Still, it is unlikely we will actually meet CJ in GTA V.
Update: On April 4th, 2012 Christopher Bellard (Young MayLay) who voiced CJ confirmed that he is not in Grand Theft Auto 5 via twitter.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Packie McReary
In the ending credits of the Ballad of Gay Tony, Packie can be seen heading into the airport to catch a plane. See below. To where we can only speculate but it is very possible he plays some part in Grand Theft Auto 5. Could he even be the main character?

Other Characters
A couple casting calls for Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games have been found online. Many different types of characters and even a familiar name has appeared among them. What purpose these character will serve is unknown but it is possible they are pedestrians and/or callers for GTA 5 radio shows.
Very Likely for GTA V
This batch of casting calls from Take-Two features the name of James Pedeaston who is a child molester featured in past Grand Theft Auto games. Aside from him, the others are only first names which could mean they are for radio shows. However, last names could be added later.
Matthew (18-25 Male United States)
A liberal young male who believes in a conspiracy made by republicans to undermine America.
Jose (30-40 Male United States)
A white creepy man who thinks that technology is a poison against the wilderness.
James Pedeaston (40-45 Male United States)
A man-boy love activist who just got released from an Indonesian prison.

A young female obsessed with sex parties, always dreaming of being a Hollywood celebrity.
Anthony (10-15 Male United States)
A young, fast-talking boy fighting for the right of young boys to drink alcohol and have sex.
Possibly for GTA V
This next batch of casting calls are for the title RUSH, which was linked to Rockstar Games via some actors. This set has mostly full names which suggests these will be more prominent characters in the GTA 5 story.

Release Date
When is the GTA 5 Release Date?
We do not have an official release date for GTA 5 yet. All GTA 5 Release Dates which you may have seen are guesses and speculation. Of course there's a chance someone may get it right, however many online stores are putting up dates as a way to encourage people to pre-order GTA 5 - they are not official. Rockstar Games have NOT announced a release date for GTA 5 yet.
Based on past games from Rockstar we can speculate on when the game may be released, or even when the release date may be announced...
GTA IV Development and Release Schedule
Development on Grand theft Auto IV began at Rockstar North within weeks of San Andreas’ release in October 2004. While Rockstar North oversaw some of the development in other Rockstar Games titles from other studios after 2004, its main focus was on GTA IV. With an official announcement in May 2006, GTA IV was originally planned for release in October 2007, however many early previews at the time said while the game content had been all but completed, the game was riddled with bugs and suffered issues with performance. This was likely because GTA IV was the first open world game Rockstar had made using their proprietary RAGE engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine). Before this, the only other game that had used RAGE was Rockstar Games Presents: Table Tennis, which acted as a tech demo for the new engine, and featured enclosed environments.
Part of the reason for the long development time was that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game were developed side by side. Most developers tend to create the game on one console and then port it over to the other, which usually results in a poor quality game on one side. This led to another problem: as the PS3 was a newer console and its architecture meant that development was more complicated, there were reports of the PS3 version falling behind. Indeed, all of the early previews were based on the Xbox 360 version of the game. It wasn't until much later that anyone outside of Rockstar was allowed to see the PS3 version running.
In August 2007, we found out that the game had been delayed until April 2008. It took three and a half years to create GTA IV, including breaking in the new game engine and implementing the Euphoria physics/animation technology. Eventually, the game was released as promised in April 2008 - 2 years after the official announcement.
After GTA IV
After April 2008, some of the team at Rockstar North continued development to work on the episodic content for GTA IV. Others were split off to work on Red Dead Redemption, which was released in May 2010. Another title, AGENT, is currently being developed by Rockstar North but we know very little about this title and have no idea when it is planned for release.
Regardless, we know Rockstar North has not been free to work on GTA 5 as much as it had been for GTA IV. Rockstar may have split development up into other studios, but historically the development of GTA games has been kept within Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design), with some outsourcing to other studios for porting over to other platforms (e.g. to Xbox with GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, and to PC for GTA IV).
So what does this mean for the GTA 5 release date?
It means there are fewer developers to work on it. However, Rockstar has now had experience working with RAGE in open environments, with Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Red Dead Redemption, and most likely Rockstar's AGENT is using it. The RAGE team has also assisted Team Bondi with L.A. Noire. GTA 5 should need less tweaking to get the game running smoothly, so they can focus on content and should therefore need less manpower. That's the theory, anyway.
Enough talk! When can we expect the GTA 5 release date?
If we gave them another three and a half years (i.e. the time it took for GTA IV to be made, including using a new engine), we would have expected to see it in October 2011. However with other projects going on, while they may have been developed at other studios, Rockstar Games is unlikely to promote more than one game at any one time. If they begin to hype up GTA 5 before Max Payne 3 (released in May 2012) and AGENT (TBA), much of the attention will be drawn away from these games. Grand Theft Auto is a big name and Rockstar Games would need to be careful not to let it overshadow their other titles.
A few major gaming websites reported their sources had said a 2012 GTA 5 release date is coming. Of course these sources are unnamed. In addition to that, Max Payne 3 released in May 2012 (delayed two months from the previous date) which means if GTA V does release in 2012, it will be much later in the year. Unfortunately with that two month delay putting Payne right in the middle of the year there is also the very "good" possibility that GTA V could be pushed back into 2013. Downloadable content also extends the life of games so depending on how much Payne DLC is released, GTA V could definitely be pushed into 2013.
Update May 2012: On May 1st, 2012, Rockstar announced Max Payne DLC plans that extend all the way into Fall 2012. We do not believe Rockstar would like to step on themselves and would like to sell as much DLC as possible so that would point to a 2013 release of Grand Theft Auto V.
Update August 2012: Max Payne DLC was confirmed into October. In addition to that the 10 Year Anniversary of Grand Theft Auto Vice City is also coming this October and likely to extend into 2013 with various things for fans - including an HD remake like GTA III this past year. These points add to the possibility of a 2013 release of Grand Theft Auto 5.
Another point to bring up is Rockstar's marketing strategies. When Rockstar is ready to release a game everyone knows it. For months leading up to release the information starts flowing. So far Rockstar Games has remained very quiet about GTA 5. What little confirmed information we have learned since the announcement has come from general Rockstar gaming news such as the Crew system beginning with Max Payne 3. If an October or 2012 release was coming we would probably know it by now.
Take-Two's Q1 fiscal 2013 financial statement also shows Grand Theft Auto V in between BioShock Infinite in February 2013 and XCOM in fiscal 2014:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Given that, we could see the GTA 5 release date to be announced sometime in late 2012, with an actual release in early 2013. If Rockstar Games wants to stick to its normal release schedule for GTA games (October) we may have a fairly long wait on our hands and won't see a release date announcement until the middle of 2013. However, with the extra development time it should be well worth the wait!
This is all speculation and you’ll probably get a different answer wherever you go. We just thought a brief history lesson might help explain why we expect to see it when we do.
GTA V Officially Announced with First Trailer Date
On October 25th, 2011, Rockstar officially announced Grand Theft Auto V with an image of the logo and a release date of the first trailer set for November 2nd, 2011. This reconfirmed our previous thought of a 2012 release being likely but again, by August 2012 we probably would have heard something.
Multiplayer
According to IGN, Grand Theft Auto V will feature "Crews" similar to Max Payne 3. The new Social Club functionality connect play across multiple titles, starting with Max Payne 3 and GTA V. By playing both games multiplayer, "crews" that the player set up in one will be carried over to the other. "Crews" will let players form private crews with friends, or join public crews. Players can be a member of up to five at the same time, and completing tasks as a crew will gain XP points for the player.

"El Burro is referenced as he was also referenced in GTA 1, so it felt appropriate that he should cross 'universes' – the 'universes' are the worlds interpreted at different definitions, 2d, 3d and high definition, so we felt brands and radio / back ground characters would exist in both, but 3 dimensional characters would not. This is the logic (as far as it could be considered logical) behind it – so no, we don’t believe any GTA3 characters could exist in the GTA4 universe."
So again, it is unlikely we'll see CJ in GTA V. Other supposed "leaks" featuring characters or the GTA 5 story are fake.
