As many of you know, May the 9th was the day Minecraft for Xbox was released. Was it a day for the Xbox Arcade record books ?

I think it was, and may be for quite a while now. Within 24 hours of the game’s release for the gaming console, it had been downloaded more then 400,000 times, thus making it the fastest selling Xbox Arcade game in history. The game even sold so quickly that “it became profitable within an hour”, said Marcus “Notch” Persson, Minecraft’s creator.

Many of you may have also noted that Minecraft isn’t the typical game. It wasn’t a recycled game idea; it was brand new. It wasn’t created by any major game development company. It was thought up and started by an individual developer who will forever be known as Notch.

Also worth noting is how Minecraft has skyrocketed Xbox’s Weekly Active Ranking. Recently, the numbers placed Minecraft in second place, which is even ahead of first-person shooter games like Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 or Halo:Reach. Is this a sign that the days of the first person shooter reign is over?

Maybe this just shows how great of a game Minecraft really is, it has became a gaming phenomenon first for PC and now for Xbox. Possibly because the game is like an adult version of everybody’s childhood favorite – Lego. You can sit for hours on end and build, create and destroy everything imaginable without having to follow a certain playing style and have all the fun in the world, what’s not to love ?
