Yup, as it turns out, Sony has plans to integrate ads into the free PSN service that has been provided to owners of the PS3 console. While this may not come as a surprise, since Microsoft has had advertisements on Xbox Live (a paid service) for a while now, the way these ads will manifest themselves will leave some gamers stunned and quite frankly up-in-arms.
According to a patent filed in November of 2011, Sony hopes to integrate ads into the regular gaming experience. From what we can tell, users will be playing their selected game, the pace will slow down, and an ad will pop up. Shortly after, the game will resume and all will return to normal.
I completely understand why companies put ads into their services, but I don’t want an advertisement interrupting my quest in Skyrim or my collecting of Lums in Rayman: Origins. To me, it makes no sense to force feed an ad into a space where absolutely everyone will get annoyed.
Unfortunately, it appears that Microsoft is looking into a similar way of getting the word out on some products, so Sony fans may not be the only ones doomed to live a life filled with interruptions promising “great deals.” Whether or not this will come to fruition anytime soon is unknown, but if it does, expect a huge revolt from companies and consumers alike.
What do you guys think about ads in your games? Would you be okay with it?
