While it certainly seems like hackers have got the best of social networks like Twitter and Facebook over the past couple of months, Facebook is still looking for ways to make your account more secure. As noted by The Next Web, this week brings the system-wide rollout of Trusted Contacts. A seemingly effective setup, assuming you really can trust said contacts.

Essentially a redesigned sendup of the Trusted Friends password security feature from 2011, Trusted Contacts allows you to assign a trusted status upon three to five Facebook pals. Once selected, those friends will receive a notification and codes, which will allow them to help restore access to your Facebook account, should it become compromised.

Obviously, Facebook recommends you choose contacts who are available to you in the real world over telephone. Probably not a great idea to hand out such an elite status to online buddies.

Security breaches are an ever-present problem in the social media space, as even major tech companies like Apple and Facebook have felt the squeeze earlier this year. But with increased security like two-step verification and actually using your network of friends to add an extra layer of safety, here's hoping things gradually get a bit better.

Trusted Contacts is available now under the security settings within your Facebook account.
