This reminds me of the guy who had a cockroach in his ear, but he is terribly afraid of them. So, instead of telling people what was going on, he was paralyzed and could only yelp when the cockroach bit his eardrum.

I'd leave it if I were her. The ear drum is like a piece of paper. If anything digs it hard enough it will cut/tear.
