Crisis averted – Sony is no longer thinking about using some sort of online downloading method to download games, instead now sticking with what we currently have: an optical disc drive system.

Sony decided against the idea because of conflicting internet speeds around the globe, which would making downloading a game practically impossible in under-developed countries that don’t quite have the infrastructure for internet speeds that most of us have. Most games are also quite large in size, so if you pair a slow internet speed and a large file and try to make it work out, it most likely won’t.

Sony does, however, have previous experience with downloadable games instead of a physical game system, coming from the PSP Go. It was Sony’s first attempt at downloadable games – and hopefully their last. The PSP Go wasn’t liked by gaming critics and as a result, production was ceased due to little demand.

Are you one of the few who would like to see consoles without a disc drive in the future? It’s been pretty much set in stone that discs aren’t going away any time soon, but what benefit could we see without them? Leave your comments below.
