With all of the latest generation devices being released or right around the corner, it’s easy to forget about previous generation consoles. Since Sony’s PS Vita release, prices for the last generation PSP have been slashed and demand is on the rise. Some consumers are finally able to justify the price and benefit from low cost titles.

Recently, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO, Jack Tretton was asked about future support for these devices and replied: “The PSP will continue to sell on at $129. Right now there is more demand for PSP than there is production capacity… that is pretty much truth with the PlayStation 2 as well. PlayStation 2 will continue to sell as long as we can build it profitably and there is an audience for it, and PSP will follow that same trend.”

What is interesting is Tretton says they are still producing the PS2 and there is actually still a demand for it. The PS2 launched over ten years ago in North America, back in late 2000. One can only wonder how much longer there will be a demand for these devices.

If Sony is aware of the market demand and still producing these products, can we really expect them to rush another console just for competition? It seems as though if there is still a demand Sony is still willing to produce it. How much longer can we expect the current PS3 to last?
