Unlike Microsofts Xbox 360, updates for the the Playstation 3 seem to be in an abundance. With the current firmware being released only two months ago, 4.00 is still relatively new.

Over the weekend, Playstation’s official press releases may have slipped up and offer some early access to the newest firmware. In their latest updates a package was uploaded title, “PS3 Debug Firmware 4.01.” Being a debug release, the run of the mill Playstation will not be able to install this package, a debug or a test unit will be needed. With the rarity of these units not much is known about the release to date.

As history shows, most all of these updates on similar firmware builds are very minor. We can only speculate if is to address last weeks scheduled maintenance, as reported by fellow writer Carl, or if this is to add in support for their new PS Vita handheld. Personally, I believe it to be the latter. With the PS Vita’s international release right around the corner, set for February 22, support will be needed for the current PS3.
