It looks like Intel is ramping up the capabilities of its Thunderbolt technology in a big way, and Engadget reported the company is showing off details of its next-gen model at at NAB 2013. A thinner, lighter cable with double the speed of the original Thunderbolt, the next-gen model is speedy enough to support Ultra HD 4K video graphics. In its new technology, Intel promises a data rate of 20 Gbps, more than double the previous gen's speed. It is backwards-compatible with all Thunderbolt-supported devices and can both transport and display Ultra HD 4K video simultaneously, which may mean the dawn of the external graphics card for PCs and Macs. Antsy technologists will have to wait, however: this fancy Thunderbolt tech won't be available until sometime next year.
In the meantime, Intel demonstrated a 1,200 Mbps cable at its show — which is already much faster than the current cables on the market — and even hinted a bit at its new Thunderbolt host controller, which will be available in the newest round of Intel Core processors.
What do you think of new Thunderbolt technology and the idea of an external graphics card?

Thunderbolt cables are awesome, but firewire is ok for me.

I have this weird port on my GPU and I thought it was a firewire but it isn't.
