On March 7th, Apple revealed an update to their Apple TV. One major upgrade to the new devices are the 1080p capabilities. Along side, a software update on the operating side to 5.1 has been made.
Taking a looking inside of the device you can see that it now has an A5 processor, but it doesn’t seem to be the same one seen in the iPhone 4s or iPad 2. This processor only contains a single core unlike the dual core arrangement within the previous devices. That isn’t all that has changed, the RAM has been given a 200% increase from the previous model, bumped up to 512 MBs from 256 MBs. The RAM is provided by Hynix, who just so happens to supply the same memory to Amazon for the Kindle Fire. With this increase, the internal memory is still stuck at a limited 8GBs, same as a base model iPod touch.
According to aicjofs, from the XMBC community, there has been a second antenna added but it’s purpose is unknown at the moment, although it has been rumored to improve Wifi speeds and connectivity.
Wondering if you should upgrade? As of now, I would suggest not to. This updated device cannot be jailbroken, as of yet, and let’s be honest, jailbreaking your Apple TV is one of the best things to do with it. I would suggest sticking with your second or even first generation Apple TV.
