Every year, gamers flock to E3 either in person, or while sitting on their couch eating Doritos, and it seems that each year, the “conference” gets less and less professional. I mean, we had Usher dancing around singing about screwing someone while “demoing” another dance game.

To me, that is not exactly what E3 should be about. I am all for entertainment while there…heck, this is an entertainment industry, but the whole thing needs to be pulled back a bit.

While I was watching the coverage for Microsoft’s reveals yesterday, I couldn’t help but feel like I was getting next to no information that would help me understand what was coming, and a whole lot of useless filler meant to excite fans of a given series or get gamers interested in picking up a game.

Essentially, the conference has turned into QVC. We are all just window-shopping for our next $60 purchase, and that is not what I think E3 should be about. I know it’s been this way for a while, but that doesn’t make it right.

The people that I know that go to E3 are all in the gaming industry in one form or another, and they all go there to catch up on the latest technology, the latest information from developers, and to get their hands on the next generation of products that they may get the opportunity to work with. I am sure they are the minority, but shouldn’t they be the majority? Plus, if you look back at the history of the expo, it was designed to be a private way for people in the industry to see what will be going on in the future, not to become a giant cash cow that draws gamers from around the country.

I’d love to know the community’s opinion on this. With E3 here, are you noticing it becoming more and more about the gamer, and less about the product? Are you annoyed, or do you like the change?
