More details are surfacing on the next generation PlayStation, recently codenamed Orbis, and it’s processing power. An unknown source has reported that the system will use a Radeon HD 7670 GPU coupled with AMD’s A8-3850 APU.

For those of you unfamiliar with the APU, it stands for an accelerated processing unit. Think of it just as it sounds. The APU includes additional processing to boost other aspects, in this case the GPU.

Now, the current A8-3850 is a quad core processor that clocks in at 2.9GHz with an integrated graphics chip, so one can only assume this will be the bottom rung figure. This APU is also equipped with an onboard HD 6550D. Alongside the APU’s integrated 6550D, the console will still use the HD 7670 as a dedicated GPU. The HD 7670 is currently DirectX 11 enabled running at 1GHz with up to 1GB of virtual RAM. This combination allows Sony to use a CrossFire configuration to churn out more power.

For all the steel traps out there, you may remember that this GPU is the exact same as the one rumored to be used in the next generation Xbox.

So there we have it, two next generation consoles, rumored to be using two identical GPUs. Not much is known about Microsoft’s set up at this time aside from the GPU choice but one can only wonder if a similar configuration will be used. If both consoles share equal or almost identical specs, both companies will have to up the user experience to edge out the competition. Will one pull ahead in the hardware race or pivot on the features?
